I wish to be read, I am a writer. I am also a member of a worldwide cyberspace organization of self-published authors and other friends of literature: The indiePENdents.org.
Our “mascot” is James Joyce, a writer of many of today’s classics that were yesterday’s unknown, unappreciated, and self-published works. We don’t charge dues, we collect no fees, and we have no paid principals. Our aim is to let readers reach the gatekeepers who prevent open access to most of the independent titles published today.
Our group (now 322 strong) got together in December 2011 and a year later acquired 501(c)3 non-profit status. In the meantime, in core volunteer teams of three, we have been evaluating randomly submitted self-published books in order to recommend the worthy ones to the public. Again, our membership is free, writers don’t pay any fees, and our judgment is therefore without any bias. Those titles that meet our basic standards are given a Seal of Good Writing, and their titles and descriptions are published in our catalog, Well Written, Well Edited, Unknown Books: Don’t Judge a Book by Its Publisher.
